Bart’s Books has had the same look since Richard Bartinsdale opened it in the 1960s, inspired by the bouquinistes in Paris. There are almost a million second-hand titles here, including cookbooks above a kitchen counter and cabinets of first editions. Chairs are in the courtyard to encourage reading, and if the shop is closed, hardbacks are lined up on shelves outside; just post your money through the letterbox.
